Lead Custodian

Job Description:

The Lead Custodian is responsible for overseeing daily custodial operations and ensuring assigned buildings, facilities, and surrounding areas are maintained in a clean, safe, sanitary, and orderly condition. The Lead Custodian provides direction to custodial staff, coordinates daily assignments, monitors work quality, maintains supplies and equipment, and assists with custodial duties as needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supervise, coordinate, and provide direction to custodial staff.
  • Assign daily cleaning duties and inspect completed work to ensure quality standards are met.
  • Perform routine cleaning and custodial duties, including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, sanitizing, and restroom maintenance.
  • Ensure offices, common areas, hallways, entrances, and other assigned spaces are properly maintained.
  • Monitor and maintain adequate supplies, cleaning products, and equipment.
  • Operate and maintain custodial equipment safely and properly.
  • Report building maintenance issues, safety hazards, damaged equipment, and needed repairs to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Ensure proper handling, storage, and use of cleaning chemicals in accordance with safety requirements.
  • Assist with opening and/or securing facilities as assigned.
  • Train and assist custodial employees with proper cleaning procedures, equipment operation, and safety practices.
  • Maintain accurate records, schedules, supply inventories, and other required documentation.
  • Respond to spills, emergencies, special cleaning needs, and other facility-related situations.
  • Assist with special events, setup, cleanup, and other facility needs as requested.
  • Ensure compliance with established health, safety, sanitation, and facility procedures.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, staff, building occupants, vendors, and visitors.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Previous custodial or building maintenance experience required; supervisory or lead experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of standard cleaning methods, equipment, and supplies.
  • Ability to safely use cleaning chemicals and custodial equipment.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with others.
  • Ability to perform physical duties associated with custodial work.

Physical Requirements:

The position may require frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, lifting, pushing, and pulling. The employee may be required to lift and carry custodial supplies and equipment and work in varying environmental conditions.

Work Environment:

Work is performed in indoor and outdoor facility environments and may include exposure to cleaning chemicals, dust, dirt, noise, varying temperatures, and other typical custodial conditions. The Lead Custodian may be required to work evenings, weekends, holidays, or special events depending on facility needs.
