The copper and fiber splicer performs work associated with copper and fiber connections and maintenance for telecommunications and broadband services. The splicer is responsible for maintaining and repairing entire telephone loop/facilities with the ability to work from ladders, poles, and bucket trucks.

Splices underground or multiple conductor cables for the maintenance, installation, removal, and rearrangement of fiber and copper cable as well as the maintenance of single line and associated telecom/apparatus equipment including cross connections to switching equipment; performs fusion and mechanical splicing, determines appropriate applications of splicing products for ISP/OSP fiber optics terminations; maintains records for drafting blueprints, participates in meetings for construction projects; repairs old cases and splices, works with splitter box terminations; builds span lines, installs repeaters; and performs tagging and testing functions on cable pairs; and other related duties.


Qualifications
  • Ability to follow subscriber plant facility records and engineering schematic work prints.
  • Ability to work in software programs for accurate data entry and recordkeeping.
  • Ability to maintain and repair entire telephone loop/facilities.
  • Ability to build span lines, install repeaters and perform tagging and testing functions on cable pairs.
  • Working knowledge of analog and digital transmission.
  • Ability to use test equipment (OTDR and power meter) to identify and locate optical and copper faults.
  • Knowledge of copper facilities and fiber networks.
  • Working knowledge of direct termination of fiber-optic connectors including mechanical, epoxy polish, heat cured as well as pigtail splicing methods.
  • Knowledge of splice trays and enclosure storage units.
  • Must know the color code system for cable pairs.
  • Knowledge of bonding and grounding requirements of telecommunications plant.
  • Working knowledge of ISP/OSP fiber optics terminations in splicing products for appropriate application.
  • Possess strong analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Willing to respond to emergency callouts, work overtime when necessary, weekends, and assigned schedules.
  • Comply with all safety regulations and meet safety requirements to maintain a successful safety record.
  • Experience in operating a bucket truck.
  • Requires lifting, pulling, placing, and digging.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. above head.
  • Ability to withstand extreme weather conditions.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces such as utility vaults.

Job Purpose:

This position will be required to do labor intensive work such as digging, pulling, pushing, and heavy lifting. The individual will also be operating heavy machinery such as backhoes, and boring machines for the placement of copper and fiber optic cable as well as working with aerial cable. A CDL license is required to operate the construction vehicles. 

Job Description:
Places and maintains cable within underground conduit system; places direct buried cable using plowing, digging, and trenching equipment; installs and removes aerial cable, including installation of messenger strands and transfer of cable and equipment from old poles to new poles; sets poles using a pole truck and digging and bracing equipment; installs central office feeder and distribution cable; requires familiarity with all RUS practices and standards; performs other duties when needed to assist in the operations of the department. Operator must be knowledgeable with all typical safety procedures and apply them at all times. Ability to operate directional drill in accordance with blueprints and designated plans.

 

Qualifications
  • CDL Class A Driveru2019s License required
  • Insurability with companyu2019s carrier
  • General knowledge of construction practices
  • Prior experience in operating directional boring machine for telecommunications a plus
  • Previous experience in underground fiber and coax construction a plus
  • Must be willing to work weekends and emergency callouts
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds frequently above head
  • Ability to work in trenches, manholes, and tunnels
  • Adaptable to extreme degrees of weather conditions/environments
  • Ability to sit, stand, stop, crouch, reach and lift for extended periods of time
  • Physical labor to use a shovel for digging, pulling and pushing heavy cable
  • Use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tool, or controls

Tower climbing, installation of wireless equipment to towers and rooftops, grounding of equipment, paperwork requirements to document work performed and to track inventory, responsible for growth of customer base, willing to work occasionally at expos to promote service: Applicant must be able to install, maintain, and troubleshoot all network hardware and wiring; must be able to install, configure and maintain customer premise equipment including routers and switches.

Physical and Environmental Requirements:

Must be able to perform enduring tower climbs
Must be able to work on your feet 75% of the day
Must be able to lift 70lbs. 
Ability to work in extreme weather conditions.

 

Qualifications
